Meet the Besties

Now that you’ve met dt and the fam, I think it is only appropriate that you meet my besties. I was lucky enough to go to college, join a sorority (woo AXO!), and as cliché as it sounds, find my bridesmaids. I was able to meet a handful of girls who I know I will always have a connection with, no matter how far away we live from each other and how long it has been since we’ve talked. So let me introduce the girls  (in no specific order) who have gotten me through the last 6 years of life.

First of all, there is Kyra (or kyra beera as I like to call her…) I was forced to hang out with this crazy chick my freshman year when my “big sister” in my sorority asked me to give Kyra a ride to initiation. My “big” and Kyra’s “big” were best friends so they thought we should be best friends. We weren’t so sure about that. But we ended up riding to initiation together and then going to one of our first sorority date functions together (not as each other’s dates but more like sidekicks while dragging our dates along) and that night in the middle of Pumpkintown, SC, a wild and crazy friendship was born. Our sophomore year we decided to live together on our sorority hall and the shenanigans that ensued will not be repeated on this blog but lets just say we had a hell of a lot of fun. We didn’t live together junior year but we had apartments next to each other senior year and we were notoriously inseparable. I also credit her with my obnoxious use of abbreviations. We’ve been fortunate enough to find boyfriends who understand that our relationship with each other is weird and unique and that there really is such a thing as the Emily and Kyra Hurricane so bless their hearts for putting up with the two of us together. I have very few memories of college without this girl in them and while our long distance friendship sucks, I know that our relationship will never change. Kyra is the female counterpart of my soulmate and I don’t know what I would do without her!

One of the first nights we ever hung out

Some theme party, but unfortunately I couldn’t tell you what the theme was…

80’s party or normal Friday night? You decide

80s party! Where we're clearly not paying attention...

Now, the next bestie you should be aware of is Steph (or Stephy). This wonderful lady came into my life my sophomore year on bid day. Another sister was actually supposed to be in charge of this new AXO baby but she pawned her off on me to go do something else. Big mistake woman!!! It may not have been love at first sight (who wants another little of the week when you are already assigned one? Not this underachieving AXO). But the second she opened that sarcastic, hilarious mouth of hers, I knew this girl and I would be more than just sorority sisters. Over the next four weeks as I got new “temporary littles” I knew that I had already picked mine out. Unfortunately for Steph, I found it thoroughly entertaining to mess with her and tell her I wasn’t her big all the way up to when she had to follow 2 miles of string to discover that I was her official “big sister.” From that day on, I had my sidekick! We went to all of our functions together, Kyra was her pseudo-big just because they were both forced to hang out with me on a daily basis. She also has been subjected to multiple thanksgivings with my family and I will always love her for fitting in so perfectly with my family (who miss you like crazy and expect you to be at our next Thanksgiving but Mama G says she hopes you’re doing well…) Since Steph was a year younger than me we only had 3 wonderful years at college together and now she lives about 4 hours away (sadsies) but I still consider her one of my best friends and miss her like crazy!

The three of us were never far apart

This is us with Babs, Steph's little and my grandlittle. Cute fam, huh!

The next influential girl in my life is Miss Mary Todd. I’ve known her for 6 years, and it’s never been Mary, always Mary Todd and that’s just the way it is! Now, fate was definitely working when the two of us some how found each other. While Mary Todd is also an AXO, she was not one at Clemson with Steph, Kyra, and me so we did not meet through our sorority. We met through Dt and his sophomore roommate. Mary Todd was dating dt’s roommate, Todd (yes Mary Todd and Todd were a couple) who just so happened to have the same last name as me (which is really weird if you knew our last name but since I don’t want people stalking me, you don’t). Mary Todd and Todd were in a long distance relationship so I didn’t really know her our freshman year very well but as those weekends that we both lived at our bf’s apartment went on, we became closer and closer and eventually formed a bond that can never be broken. Our relationship has outlasted good ole’ Todd and a few others which is really where our relationship grew. See, Mary Todd was the one who was there for me when Dt and I went through our rough patches (and there were a few…) and I like to believe that I was there for her when she went through some of her own. I remember one Valentine’s Day when we were each other’s dates because boys sucked and I wouldn’t have had it any other way. I love her for always being there through my relationship drama (as well as any other drama I may throw on her) and being my sounding board for dumb ideas (such as this blog), hard questions that no one else will give me an honest answer on, and always calling me on my BS.  Mary Todd, I don’t know what I would do without you and our gchat convos  (which we rely on because the crazy bitch went and moved to Alabama which is much too far away).

Alpha Budlight Omega Anyone?

This isn’t a very good pic but it’s proof that dt loves mary todd almost as much as I do

This is Mary Todd with one of my best girlfriends from grad school, Jennie!

Kyra and Mary Todd, gotta love 'em!

And they've gotta love me!

So those are some of the important people in my life, hope you enjoyed getting to know them and a look at our lives together.

Meet the fam!

Since you’ve officially been introduced to Dt, I think it is important that I now introduce you to the other significant people in my life. I am lucky enough to have one of the greatest families a girl could ask for. My parents are amazing and have been there for me every step of the way and I love that as I grow up our relationship continues to get closer. I also have two amazing siblings, Amelia and Tucker. Amelia (or Amy as we’ve affectionately called her since she was born) is a senior in college, a proud ZTA sister, the bubbliest social butterfly you’ll every meet, and gorgeous to boot! Tucker-boy has blown my mind these last couple years as he’s grown into a young man. He’s a high school senior who is currently applying to college, a captain of his lacrosse team, he shares a sense of humor with me and our father, which cracks me up, and he’s quite the gentleman. Take a look at these good looking people!

Mama and Daddy G. Aren't they adorable? 29 years and still going strong!

This is Christmas a couple years ago. (Mom, sorry I had this gem and it didn't make it to a Christmas card)

Meet Dt

Since I’ve given you the overview of me in my first post, I thought I’d go into specifics about the people who make my life fun and give you some pictures to put faces with names.

I think I'll start off with introducing Dt a little more since he'll be mentioned a lot in the blog. Like I said earlier, I live in Columbia with my wonderful boyfriend Dt. We’ve been dating for 6 years (yes, since I was a freshman in college) and living together for about a year and a half now. While I enjoyed some aspects of roommates, most of the time it was just a pain and I never found the perfect fit for someone who I could live with until I took the plunge and moved in with my boyfriend. I never thought I’d be THAT girl. I never imagined living with Dt before getting married but in 2010 when my current roommate went crazy and decided she wanted to live with her bf of one month, I was screwed and didn’t know what to do. That’s when Dt suggested us moving in together and it was like a light bulb went on. I cook for us anyway, we both prefer our thermostat set really low (which is a huge topic for roommates) and we still can’t get enough of each other after all of these years. So we did it! While our little apartment leaves a lot to be desired, it's ours and I’ve never been happier! J

Some pics of us throughout the years (very random, not chronological) …

This is my Freshman year when we first started dating.

And this is us in Washington D.C. this past summer.

I think we're pretty dang cute don't you? ;)

*Disclaimer: this is my nerd tribute to all things literary, if you are not interested in (or obsessed with) books you may want to skip this page.

So, one of my passions in life is reading. This is something that I’m lucky enough to share with both of my parents and I credit them with my love of this pastime. I also credit them with my eclectic taste in books. My mom loves a good romance novel and has stacks of Danielle Steele and Nora Roberts books on her bedside table. I lovingly refer to this genre as “fluff” but will recommend these books to any of my girlfriends because this is what they are always looking for when they ask me what to read next. My dad on the other hand, wouldn’t touch a Nora Roberts book even if she was writing under the pseudonym J.D. Robb in the genre that he likes which is the basic action, suspense, mystery, manly novels. Authors he has introduce me to include Dick Francis, Gus Lee, and Clive Cussler. He is also the man who introduced me to my beloved Harry Potter within months of this unknown author’s book hitting the shelves, which allowed me to grow up with the whole Hogwarts gang. My paternal grandmother who has shared her love of fantasy/sci-fiction has opened me up to an all-new genre. So, growing up with these three book lovers, I was bound to have an eccentric taste in books.
I also have this really weird thing where I find reading lists and make it a goal for myself to read all of the books on the list, whether they’re popular or not. Now some people might think this is crazy (I’m a self-professed crazy person so I’m ok with that) and wonder why I would “waste my time” reading books people I don’t know suggest. But personally, I think there are thousands of great books out there that people will never know of because they weren’t made into a movie or didn’t make it to the top of the bestseller list. So I’m going to continue my eternal consumption of all books, genres, and stories, which I will find in any way I can.
One of the ways I find new lists and book recommendations is the lovely internet that seems to always bring people together over what they love. The best book website that I have found for my book obsession is Goodreads. You can use this website to find books, document and review the ones you’ve read, learn about your favorite authors, and discuss books with fellow diehards. It is through this website that I started my goal of reading 50 books a year. At first I thought this was going to be easy, I thought I read at least 50 a year because I’m constantly reading and I’m a pretty fast reader. But when I started this in 2010 (three months late and in the middle of War and Peace), I realized that life, grad school, and work really cut into my reading time and I’m reading less than a book a week. In the end, I reached my goal and am on track to do it again this year but I’d love to be able to read more than 50 because there are so many books and so little time.
I’m going to use the 50 in 2011 page to document the books I have read this year (which is almost over but I’ll start another one for 2012) and give you guys an idea of what type of random books I stumble upon. If you have any recommendations please let me know, I’m always looking for them! Hope you enjoy as much as I do!

Hello Blogworld!

I’m Emily, or Em to my nearest and dearest; it’s very nice to meet you! I’m a little shy about beginning this blog but I thought I would give it a shot and see how I like it. I recently started reading a lot of blogs and just fell in love with the blogger community. I don’t really have a niche (yet?) so I’m not sure where this blog will lead us but I invite you along on this new journey with me.
So where do I start?
I guess I’ll introduce myself a little more… I’m a twenty-something living in Columbia, South Carolina. I recently finished graduate school and have been on the job hunt ever since (which may or may not be the hardest thing I’ve ever had to do, but we’ll get to all that a little later). I currently live with my boyfriend of six years, DT, and I am thoroughly enjoying my time being a housegirlfriend after 18 years of constant schooling/working. In my spare time I like to read, cook, pin things all over that addictive website Pinterest, and covet all of the beautiful things that I can’t afford on my current budget.
Speaking of budget, one of the first things you should know about me is that I have a champagne taste on a beer budget (in reality it’s more like a Dom Perignon taste on a water budget considering that unemployment thing, but that’s neither here nor there). See, I have this problem, much to Dt’s dismay, where I can walk into any store, and I mean ANY, and if I had to pick out one thing it would HANDS DOWN be the most expensive thing in the store! Now, this will be ok one day when I’m married to a rich doctor who spoils me rotten, ahem Dt, but considering I’ve been on a grad school budget for the last two years and am currently on a zero budget, it’s a serious problem. Like I should join an anonymous group for this type of problem! So yes God, I’m sorry, but I covet on a regular basis and have an unrealistic wish list of things that I think I need in my life (which has been blown completely out of proportion thanks to that Pinterest thing).
Now, where was I before I went off on my lack of budget tangent (I really need a job if you couldn’t tell…)? Oh right, introducing myself. Let’s see, I’m the oldest of three children and I’m definitely the stereotypical oldest child. I’m independent, I can do it all myself, and I’m willing to try things before other people. My family and I have lived in the upstate of South Carolina for over ten years now and while I’ve enjoyed parts of it, and loved my college, I left my heart in Colorado which is where my siblings and I grew up. I know, I know, you’re thinking this crazy girl has lived in the South for 10+ years and chose to go to school in the South but she’s still pining for CO? The answer is abso-freaking-lutely!!! Have y’all ever been to CO? Or upstate SC? The two are as different as it could possibly get and I have parts of both that I will cherish forever but I will live in CO again at some point in my life (Dt is fully aware of this and while he has never lived outside of SC he is completely onboard, I knew I loved him for a reason…) I’m sure I’ll go more into my love for CO later in the blog but we’re still in the middle of introductions, I don’t need to bog you down with all of that. Yet.
Now, since we’ve reviewed that I’m currently unemployed yet in possession of a graduate degree, you may be wondering what I went to all those years of school for (6 to be exact). If you aren’t wondering that, then you are no where near as nosey as me and you should probably just skip ahead. Well since you asked, I received my undergraduate degree from Clemson University in psychology. I then went on to earn my Ed.S. degree (which is equivalent to a master’s plus 30 credit hours if you were wondering, and if you already knew that, I’m thoroughly impressed because you are 1 of about 100) in counseling at the University of South Carolina.* My specialty is marriage and family counseling and most of my experience is with high school students and their families. I love working with kids and would like to find a job doing that but at the moment I’m looking for anything in the counseling field in Columbia. While job-hunting, I run multi-family groups at night and work at a retail store during the day. I’m working towards my licensed professional counselor (LPC) license and a full time job in the counseling field would really speed that along. If any of you out there have any tips, I’m always open to suggestions!
Anywhooooo, I’m going to use this blog to document my daily rantings, thoughts, cravings, inspirations, gripes, loves, and anything else that comes to mind. The basic things you need to know about me is that I’m completely random and brand new at this blog thing so bear with me if it doesn’t always flow like a normal person. Because believe me, I am not normal!
*If you are from SC or familiar at all with Clemson or USC, then you know that these are arch rival schools within the state. I’m talking about the biggest rivalry in the country that no one outside of South Carolina even cares about. So, since I graduated from both schools you may wonder if I’m divided. The answer is HELL NO!!!!! I’m a die-hard Clemson fan and will be for the rest of my life. Tiger pride was instilled in me during the best four years of my life (so far) and I will always bleed orange which means I will despise the gamecocks (yes, that is really the Univeristy of South Carolina’s mascot and Go Cocks! is commonly shouted during the games) until the end of time. So why did I go to USC for graduate school? It had the very specific program that I wanted so I sucked it up for two years and said go tigers every chance I got to anyone who would listen. Go Tigers! P.s. yes I know I can be obnoxious about my love of Clemson but I’m really sweet deep down and have many friends who are Gamecocks and I love them anyways!
A few more things about me--
Things that I love: my family, my closest friends, the love of my life affectionately referred to as DT, Clemson University and anything related to it, reading, fall, Colorado, cooking (and the subsequent eating of the tasty food that I have created), my DVR, snow, beach music, Yellowstone, my macbook (I’ll never go back to PC), puppies, southern charm, cupcakes, monograms, Taylor Swift, mountains, travelling, road trips, my nook, vodka, my kitchen-aid mixer, ketchup, naps, and the St. Lawrence River.
Things that I’m not so fond of: Humidity, Columbia, Gamecocks, running (even though I still attempt this on a regular basis), cleaning, laundry, ignorance, vegetables (even though still I attempt to eat them on a daily basis), whiskey, people who are obnoxiously loud, people who don’t respect other people’s opinions (I’m not saying you have to agree, just listen), hard rock music, being poor, cartoons, pants.
Like I said before, I’m extremely random but that’s what makes blogging fun right? Right?!? Oh well… until next time!

Love, Em
